As your knowledge and experience grow, you will learn many specific safe procedures for dealing with soldering electronic circuits. In the meantime:
- Safety glasses must be worn when soldering. This includes any other individuals in the same vicinity.
- Place soldering iron in an approved holder when not in use. It is hot and will cause burns.
- Make sure the soldering iron is placed so that the chords do not get caught up in your arms or on others.
- Know the content of your solder. Make sure that:
- You have proper ventilation
- You know the materials that make up the solder and that they are safe to use in the environment you are soldering in.
- Make sure the components to be soldered are secured before trying to solder.
- Make sure you have plenty of space to operate. Do not let others over crowd your work space.
Use the proper sized point for the size of the solder job to be done.
- The tip on your soldering iron should have a nice sharp point on the end and not be damaged in any way.
- Check the power chord for burned or melted sections that show bare wires. Label those sections "DO NOT USE" and have the instructor repair or replace.
- Do not touch molten solder it is hot.
- Use sizes of solder long enough as to not burn your fingers.
- Tie back long hair and remove loose clothing.
- Use heat sinks for heat sensitive parts and give those heat sinks sufficient time to cool before removing.
- Wipe excess solder off with a wet sponge or cloth do not flick off the solder. Flicking can cause solder to spray hitting your skin or getting into your eyes.
- When cutting excess leads, hold the scrap end. The scrap lead may get thrown through the air.
- Make sure leads are cut evenly with the solder and that leads are not shorting across to other traces or leads.
