Course Information
Courses: Introduction to Engineering Design, Digital Electronics, Principles of Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Engineering Design And Development
Instructors: Mr. Tully, Mr. Long, Mr. Thibault and Mr. McGibbon
PLTW has developed a four year sequence of courses which, when combined with
college preparatory mathematics and science courses in high school, introduces
students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering and engineering
technology prior to entering college.
The courses are:
- IED - Introduction To Engineering Design (Design and Drawing For Production, NYS)
- DE - Digital Electronics
- POE - Principles of Engineering
- CIM - Computer Integrated Manufacturing
- EDD - Engineering Design And Development
All of the above listed courses are " courses that teach problem-solving skills using a design development process. Models of product solutions are created, analyzed and communicated using solid modeling computer design software or emulation design software."
The national goals of PLTW are to:
- Increase the number of young people who pursue engineering and engineering technology programs requiring a four or two - year college degree.
- Reduce the future college attrition rate with four and two-year engineering and engineering technology programs.
- Provide clear standards and expectations for student success in the program.
- Provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for all academically qualified students without regard to gender or ethnic origin.
- Provide leadership and support that will produce continuous improvement and innovation in the program.
- Contribute to the continuance of America's national prosperity.
Digital Electronics - A course in applied logic that encompasses the application of electronic circuits
and devices. Computer simulation software is used to design and test digital circuitry prior to the
actual construction of circuits and devices.
Course Requirements:
- Attendance: School policy on attendance will be followed.
- Homework: Most understanding in ANY subject comes with some "work." You will have homework over the course of the year related to the topics we are covering. Homework assignments will be counted towards the final term grade.
- Engineering Activities: There will be activities consistently throughout the year that will relate to the student's development of design and modeling skills. These activities will become progressively more complex as the year progresses.
- Tests: Tests will be given throughout the school year. There will be a mid-year examination at the end of term 2 and a final examination at the end of the year. These will be cumulative examinations. It should be noted that NO individual will be exempt from these examinations. Our contractual obligations with PLTW require an end of year examination for ALL students.
- Notebook: You will be required to keep a bound engineering notebook, which is to include ALL your notes, work, and doodling related to the class. This notebook will receive a grade each term.
- Portfolio: All students will develop and maintain a portfolio of work documenting progress and "best work."
Grading:
Rubrics for assessment of work are listed below:
The student's grade for terms 1 and 3 will be the average of the following
- Each test given
- Each engineering activity
- Your homework average
- Your notebook grade
Your grade for terms 2 and 4 will be 80% of the above average plus 20% of your mid-year and final examinations.
Important clarifications and other information:
- Absence/Make-up work: Absence from class should not be treated lightly. This is time that can never be recovered. It is YOUR responsibility to find out what make-up work is owed and make arrangements to complete the work. Remember that choosing a field trip is choosing to miss a class period. Choose too many field trips and you miss too many class periods.
- Any absence from class, which is not excused, will result in a 5-point deduction from your term average. If you miss class and are not listed on the attendance sheet or dismissed for a field trip, you have 2 school days from the day we confront you to produce adequate documentation to explain your whereabouts. If you do not, your absence will be considered a cut and 5 points will be deducted. Also, the school policy regarding cuts will be followed.
- The PLTW classroom is filled with equipment that is, in many cases, expensive, fragile, or complicated to run. You must NOT touch, or otherwise play with any of the equipment in the room unless instructed to by Mr. Tully, Mr. Long, Mr. Thibault or Mr. McGibbon. The following rules stand every time you enter the PLTW room:
- Safety guidelines and regulations followed at all times.
- No food or drink, period.
- No modifications to any of the computers in the room - All students will be assigned a computer for which they are then responsible. Personalization of the computer (i.e. - changing wallpaper, screen fonts, screen color, etc.) will not be tolerated.
- Use of the computer is strictly limited to PLTW coursework. Access to the Internet is limited to needs of the curriculum. In short, the computer is used for PLTW or not used.
- We reserve the right to make any changes to the above, which we deem necessary.
