MSCONFIG.EXE is new to Windows 98 and is part of the Windows system configuration utility group. It lets you modify your system's startup sequence actions in a single application. You can modify the following system files by clicking on their tabs at the top of the application.
- General: Here you can choose between a normal startup, a diagnostic (interactive) startup, and a selective startup in which you specify which files Windows 98 should process. You can also create or restore system file backups. The Advanced button receives special attention in using it.
- Config.sys: This tab lets you remark out lines in the CONFIG.SYS without actually having to fire up a text editor. The remark flag "REM TSHOOT:" appears at the beginning of each line that you disable by clearing it's checkbox.
- Autoexec.bat: Same sort of behavior as in the Config.sys tab, but with respect to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- Sytem.ini: Lets you remark out entire sections, or individual lines, of this startup file. The left windowpane is an expandable, two-level hierarchy.
- Win.ini: Same sort of behavior as the System.ini tab, but with respect to the WIN.INI file.
- Startup: This tab is very useful because it lets you control programs whose automatic execution is specified in the Registry, as well as those specified in the Startup group.
