Internet TIPS

  • The Internet is often called the Information Superhighway of Cyberspace.
  • If you plan on using the Internet regularly, connect through an Internet service provider, not a commercial online service. This will save you money.
  • The World Wide Web is also called WWW or W3.
  • Yahoo stands for Yet Another Hierarchically Officious Oracle.
  • There are two ways that a search tool finds pages on the Web.
    1. Some search tools have automated robots that travel around the Web looking for new pages.
    2. People also submit information about pages they have created.

Note: Since hundred of new pages are created each day, it is impossible for a search tool to find and catalog every new page on the Web.
  • There is no central listing of e-mail addresses. The best way to find out someone's e-mail address is to phone and ask.

    • The World Wide Web page located at http://home.netscape.com/home/internet-white-pages.html offers several search tools to help you find e-mail address.
  • If you want to practice sending a message, send an e-mail message to yourself.
  • For a list of the available mailing lists:

    1. Go to the Web Page - http://www.neosoft.com/internet/paml

    2. or Go to the news.answers newssgroup and look at the messages with the subject Publicly Accessible Mailing List.
  • Similar to newsgroups, there are hundreds of mailing lists that let you discuss topics of interest with people around the world. Mailing lists are usually more specific than newsgroups and the messages are delivered directly to your mailbox.
  • You need a special program to chat on the Internet. The following sites offer chat programs free of charge.

    • mIRC program (http://huizen.dds.nl/~mirc/index.htm
    • Global Chat (http://www.prospero.com/globalchat
  • You can view a list of most FTP sites at the following Web site:
    http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/ftp-interface.html
You can also find FTP site listings in the comp.answers and news.newusers.questions newsgroups.
  • Like an Archie FTP search tool, Veronica and Jughead were also named after Archie comic book characters.
