Equipment Needed for Internet Use


You need specific equipment and programs to access the Internet.
  • Computer - You can use an IBM-compatible, Macintosh or UNIX computer. Basically, this includes an enclosure with an operating system, monitor, keyboard and mouse.

  • Communication hardware - Equipment designed to process digital information from your computer to the Internet.

    • MODEM - A MODEM exchanges informatiion between your computer and the Internet.

    • Network Interface Card (NIC) - Higher speed transfer of digital data.

  • Programs - You need special programs to use the Internet. Most service providers give you the programs free of charge.

  • Means of connecting to the Internet

    • Telepone line - Information passes through the telephone lines.

    • or ISDN line - Integrate Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a special telephone line specifically designed for the transmission of computer data at very high speeds. ISDN lines are used mostly by businesses that are connected to the Internet 24 hours a day. These line are available from your telephone company for additional cost.

  • Service provider - A service provider is a company that give you access to the Internet for a fee.
