Introduction to E-Mail

You can exchange electronic mail ( e-mail ) with people around the world. E-mail is the most used feature on the Internet.

  • Content: A message can contain a few lines of text or several hundred. Unlike with the postal service, messages are charged by weight.

  • Speed: E-mail is much faster than old-fashsioned mail, called "snail mail." A message can travel around the world in seconds.

  • Cost: There is usually no charge for sending and receiving electronic mail, even if a message travels around the world. Rather than making long distance calls to colleagues, friends or family, you can save money by using the Internet to exchange messages.

  • Receiving messages: You do not have to be at your computer to receive a message. Your service provider keeps all your messages until you ask for them. Make sure you regularly check for messages.

NOTE: When you send a message, do not assume the person receiving the message will read it right away. Some people may not check their messages.
