Web Browser & Hypertext

A Web browser is a program that lets you view and explore information on the World Wide Web.

  • The most popular Web browsers.

    • NCSA Mosaic was the first graphical Web browser.

    • Internet Explorer (IE) - Internet Explorer is packaged with all of the Windows operating systems.

    • Netscape Navigator - Netscape can be downloaded free online or sent to you for a small shipping and handling charge (about $3.00). Netscape was bought by AOL around the year 2000.

      • A web browser keeps track of the pages you have viewed during your journey and lets you easily return to any of these pages (Cache is used to accomplish this task).
  • Hypertext

    • Hypertext is text that contains links to other pages on the Web. You can select hypertext to jump to another page. The page may be stored on the same computer or a computer across the city, country or world.

    • The word hypermedia is replacing the word hypertext, since pages now contain links to pictures, sound and even video.

  • HTML
    • HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a programming language used to create pages on the Web. HTML creates links between Web pages and defines how text and graphics will appear on a page.
