Creating a Startup Diskette
(also called an emergency or rescue diskette)

When you purchase a new computer, it is a must to create a startup diskette in case of an emergency or system crash. It gives you a chance to recover.

When you insert the startup disk in your computer before restarting, the computer starts from that disk, not from your hard drive. It allows you to access the hard drive(s) and contains several utility programs to assist in recovery and/or repair of system and data files.

To make a startup disk, you will need one floppy disk with at least 1.44 MB capacity.

  1. Click Start - Settings - Control Panel

  2. Double-clicking Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Startup Disk tab.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: For the average user, it is very wise to backup your data and files once a week.
